HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

For this class we had to interview a Human Resource Manager of a large organization. During the interview process we had to discover what “critical issues” they were currently facing and how they managed these to ensure the success of their businesses. We chose the Naval Medical Center (NMC) Balboa, and I was the liaison between the Human Resource Office and other members of my group.

This was a difficult class for me…I did not enjoy it, nor the people or the department. Unlike my Educational Technology Courses - they were the next best thing to my discipline – it took everything I had to go to class. But, I had a plan, which was to take at least nine units so I would be qualified to teach in this discipline for some on-line educational programs. Another frustration was the written exams; I wondered if the faculty even cared about their students. Without having a background in this discipline, I would discourage anyone from taking these courses.

However, our project was a success! We discovered that NMC Balboa critical issue was the hiring and retention of RN’s and we discussed in detail what they were doing to correct it. One huge thing was the approval of Special Salary Rate for the RN’s and also streamlining the hiring process. So far, these changes have seemed to improve the manpower issue of RN’s at the hospital.
